information from the British Library

The Cataloguing-in-Publication (CIP)

The Cataloguing-in-Publication (CIP) Programme alerts libraries and other book buyers to forthcoming titles in advance of publication. The British Library contracts an outside agency (currently Bibliographic Data Services Limited) to gather information from publishers on their future titles. A standardised catalogue record for each title is then created to include the author, title, publisher, date of publication, price, and ISBN. Name headings are authority controlled. Library of Congress Subject Headings and Dewey Decimal Classification numbers are added to enable subject access. Up to 16 weeks in advance of publication, these CIP records are added to a range of British Library products and services which are available to public, academic and other libraries, and bibliographic information providers and agencies worldwide. Acquisitions librarians routinely use CIP information in order to place advance orders for new titles.

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an internationally accepted code which identifies the title of serial publications. It is an eight digit number consisting of seven digits plus a check digit which enables a computer to recognise when the number is incorrectly cited. The check digit may be an X, otherwise the ISSN is fully numeric.

The ISSN is not connected with ownership of the journal, nor does it confer copyright or protect the title of the serial from use by other publishers. The ISSN is not related to legal deposit. Under the Copyright Act of 1911, as amended by the British Library Act of 1972, all publications, including individual issues of serials, must be deposited with the British Library whether they carry an ISSN or not.

Legal Deposit

Publishers and distributors in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have a legal obligation to send one copy of each of their publications to the Legal Deposit Office of the British Library within one month of publication.

The right of the British Library to receive one copy of every publication distributed in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland is based on the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003 and the Irish Copyright Act 1963 (currently being replaced by similar provisions in the Copyright and Related Rights Bill of 1999).

Copyright

This site is the Government-backed home of UK Intellectual Property on the Internet. They aim to bring you all the answers to your questions and all the resources you need to find your way through the IP jungle of Copyright, Designs, Patents and Trade Marks.

The Copyright Licensing Agency Ltd. (CLA) is the UK's Reproduction Rights Organisation and a member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO).

Formed in 1982, it is a non-profit making company owned by its members, the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) and the Publishers Licensing Society(PLS), to encourage and promote respect for copyright.

Copyleft

is a play on the word copyright and is the practice of using copyright law to remove restrictions on distributing copies and modified versions of a work for others and requiring that the same freedoms be preserved in modified versions.
Copyleft is a form of licensing and may be used to modify copyrights for works such as computer software, documents, music, and art. In general, copyright law allows an author to prohibit others from reproducing, adapting, or distributing copies of the author's work. In contrast, an author may, through a copyleft licensing scheme, give every person who receives a copy of a work permission to reproduce, adapt or distribute the work as long as any resulting copies or adaptations are also bound by the same copyleft licensing scheme. A widely used and originating copyleft license is the GNU General Public License. Similar licenses are available through Creative Commons — called Share-alike.
Copyleft may also be characterized as a copyright licensing scheme in which an author surrenders some but not all rights under copyright law. Instead of allowing a work to fall completely into the public domain (where no copyright restrictions are imposed), copyleft allows an author to impose some but not all copyright restrictions on those who want to engage in activities that would otherwise be considered copyright infringement. Under copyleft, copyright infringement may be avoided if the would-be infringer perpetuates the same copyleft scheme. For this reason copyleft licenses are also known as viral or reciprocal licenses.
In summary: While the copyright only protects the exclusive rights of the originator by excluding all others under penalty, the Copyleft protects the freedom of all others, practically to use copyrighted works as if there were no copyright law at all.
