Lubok Publishing
Since 2007 Lubok is publishing original graphic picture books. For the serial LUBOK and the monographic LUBOK SPEZIAL contemporary artists are dealing with the technique and the aesthetics of linocut. This somehow frumpy technique is taken as a challenge which bestows graphic art new impulses and juvenescent interest.
The Lubok-linocuts are printed directly from the original piece of art, but which is not bargained exclusively but is binded into a book and sold inexpensively.
Although the artists do not sign or number the single linocuts which also can‘t be hung up those are still originals with value and aura. And although the publishers Christoph Ruckhäberle and Thomas Siemon want the artwork to be seen as inexpensive books (and vice versa: the books as inexpensive artworks) it is absolutely appropriate to take a further look at each page and to enjoy each single one as a peace of art.
Initially the term "Lubok" described popular Russian Folk art from the 18th and 19th century, inexpensive original graphic art that was sold at bazaars and market places: Pictures for the people!
Ruckhäberles Lubok publishing is a prize-winning project. Beside being awarded for the design of several books it was also awarded in 2009 for being an ideal model of using social networking productively and of establishing new structures in collaborating in a fast changing culture scene.
