Jim Colquhoun

Jim Colquhoun's patented Peripatetic Randomiser

Jim Colquhoun's work unfolds around a profound engagement with place and space and the subsequent experiences and research this engenders. Usually this means walking in an area, drawing, taking photographs, talking to people and producing finished texts and drawings. He views these activities as a form of divination, wherein he tries to filter a particular place through the lens of his own subjectivity.

He is instinctively drawn to the margins, whether they be cultural, political, psychological, social or spatial and will endeavour to blur the boundaries between art and life, fiction and fact, history and myth. The work exhibits a kind of skewed and ironic romanticism – the solitary walker, autodidacticism, hermeticism, religious and occult motifs and exoticism all abound and are coarsened by being shoved into close proximity with popular culture, often in the form of pulp fiction, para-political speculation and dubious folklore of one kind or another.

He is obsessed by the spurious efficacy of the book form and regularly produces pamphlets, chapbooks and broadsheets of one kind or another
