Rag-and-Bone Shop Books

Rag-and-Bone Shop Books is the working title for Joanna Gibbs' hybrid practice of bringing embroidery into digitally-worked and lino-cut relief printed images.

Joanna handbinds her written work, choosing materials that will further the meanings of a given piece. Leaf Watermarks, for example, features baking paper pages whose translucency and weightless feeling helps conjures up the notion of the insubstantiality of self that is at the heart of this text.

Joanna's books sometimes also take the form of carved figures and textile sculptures in which narrative and visual elements playfully reference the conventions of the book. Aiming always to remain recognisably readable as texts, these pieces stray most obviously out of the conventional category of the book into the polymorphous genre of the artist's book - - varying from free-standing figures whose limbs and paws unfurl to divulge tales, to three-dimensional scenes containing elements that open out to reveal embedded narratives.
